Long Beach Minutes

Long Beach Workforce Development System
Winter 2000, February 10, 2000

Welcome/Introduction

Rick Gonzalez introduced Long Beach Workforce Development System, Administrator Ray Worden.

Mr. Worden welcomed the group to Long Beach and talked about the exciting information and events his staff planned for the network. He discussed the approach Long Beach is taking in making the transition to the Workforce Investment Act.

California Monitor’s Network – Business Meeting

Dedre Ahl distributed copies of the Network’s new letterhead and logo. She recapped the events leading up to the development and choice of the logo.

If you haven’t visited the California Monitor’s Network Web Site, please do. It is growing and now contains a listing of the membership, the Network By-Laws, and some informational items. There are plans to put the minutes of the Network meetings on the site also, Dedre announced. The address is: http://welcome.to/camonet

Thank you to Brenda Rodriguez of Employment and Training Resources serving Kern, Inyo and Mono Counties, for all of her hard work on the Web Site.

Vyvian Timm, has been invited to be a presenter at the NAJA meeting in Oklahoma City, OK this April. She will be on a panel with monitors from across the nation. Their topic is monitoring WIA.

Dedre conducted a discussion regarding the frequency of Network meetings. She noted that all SDAs are in a state of preparation at this time and that we have had little guidance from the State regarding WIA. With this in mind, it was suggested that the Spring meeting be skipped and that the Network meet again in the Fall when things are more settled.

Dedre also informed the Network that she has been in contact with Vince Koller of Social Policy Research (SPR) potential speaker at the next meeting. SPR collects and reviews the data submitted by SDAs across the nation for addition to the National Workforce Database. He would present information on the monitoring of One-Stops.

Nomination forms were distributed to the membership. The following were nominated for office:

President:         Dedre Ahl    &    Rick Gonzalez

Vice President:  Dedre Ahl    &    Rick Gonzalez

Secretary:        Vyvian Timm

Each nominee must submit a letter from his/her SDA administrator approving participation as an officer of the Network prior to the election that will be held at the next scheduled meeting.

PRESENTATIONS

Staff of the Long Beach Workforce Development System presented very informative sessions on adult and youth services development. They outlined their approach to the changes required by WIA and shared many valuable tools.

The presentations were interspersed with case scenarios and open discussion regarding some of the subjects that will be critical in implementing WIA.

TOUR OF THE LONG BEACH CAREER TRANSITION CENTER

Thank you to the very gracious staff of the Career Transition Center the visit was informative and gave all an opportunity to see many of the WIA partners operating together at one site.

CLOSING

President Dedre Ahl thanked the Long Beach representatives for their hospitality and very fine program.

The meeting was adjourned at 11:00 a.m., February 11, 2000.
